PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF WHAT GOES DOWN OUR TOWN DRAIN!

Water Main Project News

The Water Main Upgrade Project underway in Alberton will improve our ability to meter water-usage accurately and efficiently. AND We need the public's help at this time.

Our Contractors are working at the west end of town — along Railroad Avenue from 3rd Street to the Milwaukee Spur. In this project area ONLY (see Poster Map), we need to identify any potential water sources not visible to the crews / Engineer.

We need each resident to survey his/her home properties for potentially unseen water sources.

  • Do you have free-standing water spigots that may be hidden by shrubs, possibly forgotten, on your property?

  • Do you want to maintain the potential for water connection at these points?

Then you need to contact the Town of Alberton.
Letting us know about your water access points will help ensure that you don't lose that connection to the improved water system.

Important Note: This request for information does not pertain to your home water hookup. We need to know about other water outlets on your property that are not currently documented. This information pertains ONLY to the current Project Phase. Thank you for sharing this information with your neighbors.

Water Main Project

Multi-Million Dollar Upgrade Underway
The Town of Alberton is in Phase Two of a four-part upgrade to its water system. The project involves water treatment, delivery and storage and is financed by a series of grants, loan forgiveness, and a rate increase.

PHASE I
The first phase of the project has been completed. We have upgraded our disinfection system -- transitioning from chlorine gas to a sodium hypochlorite water-disinfection system.  We also added chlorine to the Well House.

PHASE II
The second phase of the upgrade is underway. We are upgrading the existing distribution lines north of Railroad Avenue. We are also installing new water-use meters. This phase began Spring of 2022.

PHASE III & IV
Phase Three is to install a new 200,000 gallon, water-storage tank. Phase Four is to develop a new well and pump, enhance testing water at selected residences and continue to improve disinfection. Timetable for this work: TBD.

PROJECT FINANCING
We have obtained several grants including a $750,000 TSEP grant, $125,000.00 DNRC grant, $88,000.00 ARPA grant.  We are also applying for a forgiven principle SRF loan.

Alberton Water-Sewer System

The Town of Alberton obtains its water for residential use and fire suppression from a natural spring on the north side of town. Water is collected and chlorinated in a 300,000 gallon tank. Additionally, the Town can pump groundwater from a Well House on Parkway Drive.

Our Sewage Treatment Plant uses a three-cell lagoon system with UV disinfection. The main Lift Station is located at the lagoon. Because the system flows into the Clark Fork river, the Town is required to take weekly, monthly and quarterly tests for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).  There is also a Lift Station located at the east end of town that feeds into the main system.

Rates & Fees

The cost of water & sewer in Alberton is a progressive-rate schedule based on water usage. The fee to connect to the system is $100. The base rate is $47.41 per month. Usage is metered and meters read monthly. Bills are sent out on the last working day of the month.
